When the Indians kill ten-year-old Regina's father and brother, taking her and her sister captive and later separating them over the Allegheny mountains, Regina is forced to accept Indian ways. When white soldiers reach the village in her nineteenth winter, she is torn between the Indians, who are the only family she knows, and the gentle brown-haired woman whom she only remembers in her dreams as her mother.
