The Nature & Functions of Law is designed for the liberal arts curriculum. It focuses on the special character of law in performing certain social functions. These functions include the resolution of disputes, the maintaining of historical continuity & doctrinal consistency, the protecting & facilitating of voluntary arrangements, & the resolving of acute social conflict. Certain aspects of criminal & civil procedure, judicial reasoning on the basis of precedents (focusing on manufacturers' liability in tort), the law of contracts, labor, race & gender law are presented to test the success of the legal system in carrying out these basic purposes. American & comparative & international law materials are included.
