In this 96-page, full-color, illustrated chapter book, Martha loses her collar and ends up at the dog pound. She leads an escape attempt, only to find that freedom isn't much without a family. When Martha's family finally comes to take her home, she decides that she can't leave her shelter friends behind. Adopting that many dogs is out of the question, so Martha, Helen, and the dog pound caretaker, Kazuo, cook up a plan to find families for all of the pound pooches. The book will include a cast of characters intro section and two pages of word-fun and enrichment activities. About the show Martha Speaks is a new 40-episode, animated series premiering on PBS KIDS, September 2008. Designed to enrich the vocabulary of 4- to 7-year-olds, the series is based on the classic Houghton Mifflin books by Susan Meddaugh that have charmed and captivated millions of children. Martha, Helen, and friends will be introduced to an even wider audience through the television series. Every episode of Martha Speaks will use Martha's unique linguistic abilities and the hilarious consequences of her habit of saying exactly what's on her mind to engage kids and help build their vocabulary skills.
