When Martha's family brings her home from the pound as a puppy, she barks and woofs like any other dog. But after Helen accidentally feeds her a bowl of alphabet soup, Martha begins to speak! Having a talking dog isn't as fun as it might seem though. Martha just never seems to know when to STOP talking! This retelling of the original Martha Speaks story uses picture symbols within the text to help introduce lovable Martha and her fun-loving family and friends to beginning readers. A picture reader, or Rebus reader, is a story in which some of the words have been substituted with pictures and are repeated throughout the story. A child just learning to read will gain confidence as she recognizes and "reads" the pictures, which are matched to written words in an index.
