The Fourteenth Amendment is the vehicle by which citizens receive the protections in the Bill of Rights from abuses by state and local officials. The road down which we traveled in our constitutional history to reach this point was lengthy and complex. However, throughout the twentieth century, slowly but surely the protections of most of the Bill of Rights were included, or "incorporated," into the Fourteenth Amendment's due process clause.
