Instead of going off to fight in World War II with other young men of Sweet Creek, Pennsylvania, Bud Shoemaker abides by his Quaker beliefs and becomes a conscientious objector. Soon, folks in town treat the Shoemakers differently. Fourteen-year-old Jubal Shoemaker, who always wanted to be like his older brother, wonders if he can when Bud's decision is tearing their family apart.
